Looking for semi-rigid, clear resin that floats in water

I am looking for a product which will float in water. I would like to also have the product be transparent. It should be solid like plastic, not soft like silicone.

it should be flexible and strong, not rigid and brittle.

any recommendations?

Our clear can and will float by adding microballons however it will take away the water clear of the resin and make it milky white.

Also it is not flexible but rigid like ABS plastic.

the most important aspect of the project is that it is flexible.

the second most important is that it floats.

lastly, it should be clear.

it is no big deal to trade transparency for buoyancy as it is not necessary but merely preferred for later lighting effects that will be added..

flexibility cannot be compromised.

Do you have anything flexible that I can add microballoons to?

Lastly, The product I am trying to replicate retails for $20 and if I am unable to reproduce this for less than that amount then your products will not be feasible.

Finished product should weigh approximately 185 grams.

Todd,

We do have the Alumisol that is very flexible and by adding microballoons it can float. It is a semi clear, but when adding the microballons it will go white. There seems to be a catch 22 here! (smile) The Alumisol is quite inexpensive you can go on line for pricing and read up on that, see what you think. Please feel free to call if you would like to discuss your application.

The Alumisol is easily in the price range i am looking for.

When I watch the video about its usage in soft bait fishing lures it brings to mind one question.

The end product while it is very flexible, it is very very soft. is there any way to harden it and still retain its flexibility?

In the video I have already posted here the product is both flexible and relatively hard. http://yfrog.com/6pvideo3z

Todd,

There is hardener and softener, please see site for more information on those support products for the Alumisol. We also have a heat stabilizer that allows you to remelt the Alumisol back into a liquid form to reuse damaged soft baits.

In your products section I was unable to locate any hardener. The products listed are as follows.

Alumisol Soft Plastic Alumisol Softener Alumisol Heat Stabilizer Can you please link to the hardener?

thank you.

while I do not see a place to buy it separately, I do notice 8 oz of it is included with the kit.

also I am unsure how much hardener to use to produce the results I am looking for.

Todd,

That is relatively new I found out and they are going to put it on the site. Yes I believe it does come in the kit. Please feel free to call and place your order if it is more convenient at this time.

I do not need the entire kit. I am wondering if the hardener will produce the desired results, and how much I should use.

Is there a limit to the amount of hardener you can add? is there a maximium amount that can be added? can I add too much? can I add enough hardener to make it completely hard?

Todd,

We typically don't recommend using anymore than 10% hardener as it increases the hardness substantially. Also, using straight hardener is extremely touchy and scorches very easily. We do not recommend using a microwave as it almost always scorches as soon as it gets to temperature. The vinyl content is very high in the hardener and therefore using as a dilution in the Alumisol is the best bet. As far as volume goes, it does not change. Still need the same amount of volume as using Alumisol to fill a cavity.

My Best,

Carol
