Milling alumilite white

I need to know from an experienced user how this alumilite can be used with a CNC machine. Speeds, feeds and tooling used will be great to know.

Thank you

Gabi,

It has been used on a CNC machine before, as far as specs, your best bet would be to call and talk with the tech who has used it on the CNC machine.

THis isn't strictly CNC-related, but I turn blanks made from Alumilite regular and white on a lathe fairly regularly I can take speeds up to about 2,000RPM with light cuts from HSS and carbide cutters without too much trouble. I've found that there's something about the resin that can make tools chatter a bit at higher speeds, though that may be related to the tool type and position more than the resin itself. I tend to be fairly aggressive with it, but do pause often to make sure nothing softens up on me. It's a lot like turning hard, oily woods like Ipe and Lignum Vitae (both of which turn more like plastic than wood). With good sharp tools I get long, thin ribbon-like shavings rather than chips, which need to be cleared fairly often.

So long as you keep your temps down and the speeds moderate I think you'll be fine. Try it out on some scrap blanks and see what works best for your application.

BTW my blanks are usually cylinders from 1/4 to 3 inches in diameter, up to 24 inches long.

Rob,

Thank you ... informative and appreciated input. I have seen some beautiful pens turned using the Alumilite resins. You penturners are truly artist.

My Best,

Carol
